We are the Wellesley Amateur Radio Society, a club of amateur (“ham”) radio operators and enthusiasts centered in the Wellesley, Massachusetts area who have a wide variety of interests within our hobby: providing emergency communications services for the public when the usual methods are unavailable; “talking” with other hams, both local and around the country and world, using many different methods, from voice to Morse code to digital modes, perhaps using our radios together with a computer; and buildng electronic things. We even talk to other hams via our own amateur radio satellites in low Earth orbit, and by bouncing signals off the Moon! Our members enjoy building radio kits and electronic gadgets and experimenting with various ways to communicate. Our meetings usually include a presentation on a topic, sometimes technical and sometimes not, of interest to hams.
Our radio club was formed in February of 1950 (some documentation notes 1951) and affiliated with the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) on November 20, 1951. Dom N1DM went to the ARRL a couple of years ago and found our affiliation papers, which reveal 16 charter members including 12 voting members; the president was Don Scully W1HRY, the vice president was S. Willard Bridges W1NWO, the secretary Ed Dillard W1RPM, and the treasurer Horace Schermerhorn W1TTY. They met monthly at the Wellesley Hills library with most members residing in Wellesley Hills. Dom did some online Callbook searches and discovered that we were first listed in the fall of 1952 with Don Scully being the trustee until 1956, where our address was listed as 210 Washington Street, Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts, which was the address of the library where the club had a room (and station?).
